James W. Jenkins: This gymnasium and cafeteria served Chesterfield schools for a number of years. The gym was completed (in 1934 by the cornerstone, or 1939 according to newspaper accounts) by the Works Progress Administration, which was a labor force organized by the government to provide employment for people following the depression of the late 20’s and early 30’s. The walls of the building are approximately eighteen inches thick. It is reported by Walter Burr, Jr. that students helped unload the rocks used in the construction of the building.

Elizabeth Ann Gaddy Rivers: It is more likely that the 1939 completion date for the gym is the correct one. My father, J. Wilson Gaddy, worked on this project, and that occurred after his marriage to my mother, Elizabeth Teal, in 1936. Even though he spoke of the work as grueling, he also spoke of the finished product with pride. One of the most cherished memories of my childhood is attending basketball games in this gym and watching the championship girls' basketball teams. They were coached by the local Presbyterian minister, E. N. "Preacher" Clower. Some team members I remember watching are Sara Grant (Scott, now deceased), Mary Frances Burch (now Owen), Lyvonne Moore (now Lear), Mary Jean Boring (now Lineberger), Peggy Hursey (now deceased), Bertie Lee Smith (now Oliver), Louise Boan (now Jones), and Betty Byrd Hunley (now Barrett).

Today (2000) the Chesterfield County Recreation Department is housed in the facility, and it continues to serve the community as it has since it was first completed.

The Gym burned on April 22, 2004. The building was razed, and the Recreation Department was re-located to 344 East Boulevard (site of the old middle school). It was then convereted to the YMCA on 8-16-2006.
