Dr. William Perry: A Perkins house sat back from the street at this location. Mrs. Perkins had an iron fence in front of the house. She was a widow as far as I can recall. She kept her windows plastered with newspapers so people could not see in. I never saw the inside of the house. There was nothing between the Perkins house and the Bank of Chesterfield until Mr. Welsh built stores there.
After the Perkins house was torn down, the Chesterfield Hardware occupied the space of the Perkins house and later-day Moore's. Mr. H. E. Wilson, Sr., came here from Cheraw. He was sponsored by the Duvall family, and he operated the hardware.
Elizabeth Ann Gaddy Rivers: Gene Wilson, Mr. H. E.'s son, operated the hardware for many years. The Duvalls sold it to I. J. (Jack) Rivers, Jr. and Carol Outen Johnson in 1987. They re-located to the south side of Main Street in the 90's. |
