Laura M. Jordan: My mother inherited this store from her mother. Burch Groceries was located here at one time.

Elizabeth Ann Gaddy Rivers: My father operated a grocery store in the late 40's and early 50's. He and Ingram Rivers opened the store together, but later Ingram sold his part to my father, Wilson Gaddy. They had bought the store from J. P. (Press) Burch. I remember that Saturday was the big day at Daddy's store. It opened at 7:00 a. m. and didn't close until there was no one on the street, usually around 10:00 p. m.
J. W. Bittle, the Chief of Police, used the back room of the store to pay the town crew. He saw to it that Daddy got his money for what they had charged during the week.
There was never a parking place on Main Street by 3:00 p. m. on Saturdays. People rushed to town to do their shopping, and then they stayed parked until night in order to visit. This was a big social occasion, and it was understood where each family's car would be parked.
Welborn Pusser moved his dry goods store to this location from down the street at 144 Main Street (building last occupied by Jones Real Estate) prior to moving to the south side of Main Street. His son Hugh later ran a dry goods store at this location for a short time before moving to the south side of Main Street.
In later years, Charlie and Ellen Deese Crawford opened Crawford Furniture which is run today by their son, Mike Crawford, who is in the process of moving the business to the south side of the street.
