Dr. William Perry: The hardware might have encompassed the previous building as well as this building. Buck Branch was traveling for a hardware company out of Richmond, and he married Margaret Duvall from Cheraw and decided that he wanted to live here. He opened a hardware store at this location. Gene Stephenson worked for Buck while he operated the hardware. Buck bought the Andy Lucas house on Crescent Drive. I used to catch crawfish in the stream behind the Lucas house. The first business I recall at this location was a Greek restaurant run by Pete Zounis. Pete returned to New York but came back to Ruby and operated a restaurant on the outskirts of Ruby. He bought the old McGregor House just up the street in Ruby.

Elizabeth Ann Gaddy Rivers: Buck Branch had a hardware store here, and in later years James McRae had a drug store but it burned. I recall Tomlinson’s had a drygoods store that was managed by Roy Burch, Press Burch’s brother. Cato's, a women's store, was located here as well.
My most vivid memory of this location is when the Davis Cafe was here. It was owned by Ruth Davis Watson (later Liptrott) and Mary Davis Hammond (later Brown). It was located next door to my daddy's grocery store. One night our family was awakened with the news that the Davis Cafe was burning and that the fire was threatening to break through the wall to my daddy's store. I recall standing across the street in my nightclothes crying from fright.
In later years Lois Watson ran a dress shop here followed by Savannah owned by Jennifer Hancock Hurst. Carol Outen Johnson purchased the business in 2006 and changed the name to Savannah's.
