Dr. William Perry: Dr. D. H. Laney operated a drug store at this location. He lived next door to my mother. Dr. Laney had a cleft palate that was never repaired. The building burned and stayed vacant for a long time. J. D. Jones and I were in partnership in this drug store when he started here. I later sold my part to J. D.

Elizabeth Ann Gaddy Rivers: Around 1988 Ellen Brewer Tucker opened her beauty shop Shear Magic which still occupies the building today. Prior to this, she and her husband Dean were the owners of Carolina Fried Chicken which was located on West Boulevard.
I remember when this building housed Jones Pharmacy. Sam Gandy worked in the pharmacy along with J. D. Jones, the owner. Jones Pharmacy was the only drug store in town that sold root beer! It was also close to the theater. In the early days the theater did not sell drinks; so that's where we went to get drinks to go with our popcorn. The challenge, though, was getting the drinks by the eagle eye of Billy Lee.
According to John Frank McLeod, Jr., Dr. D. T. Teal, his grandfather, owned this drug store some time after Dr. Laney's ownership. He remembers that Dr. Teal sold the store to Bill Truluck and Hugh Gaddy who then sold it to J. D. Jones. Even though I was a very young child, I can still hear Dr. Teal racing the motor on his car as he backed it out of his parking spot in front of the store.
