Laura Mangum Jordan: My mother inherited this building from her mother.
Dr. William Perry: All these buildings as far down as the old barber shop were owned by Mrs. Park Mangum. They came much later in the development of the town. Mr. Hursey maintained a garden at this spot for several years. Elizabeth Ann Gaddy Rivers: I remember when Sam Presson's grocery store was here. Dewey Stokes worked for him, and my husband, Charles W. Rivers, worked there as a teenager. As a matter of fact, it was Dewey who gave "Plume" his nickname because he saw him using his pocket comb to comb his "plume" when he should have been working; the name stuck! When Roy Hurst ran the Western Auto here, Margaret Stroud Moore was his bookkeeper. Before the current occupancy, this building was the home of three restaurants-Cliff Brumett's; Mr. Mac's Diner, owned by John McCormick; and Connie Jo's, owned by Connie Huneycutt Hancock. |
