John Thomas Hurst: This photo shows the first house that Roy LeGrande Hurst built at this location. This house was destroyed by fire prior to 1934. (The Moore house next door is visible in the background.)

The present building (below) was built for the Hursts by Carl Brigman in 1950. The Hurst family occupied the house until Mrs. Madge Gaskins Hurst’s death in May of 1988. The house was sold to Louise Melton Gulledge who lived there until John Robert and Barbara Burr Landon bought the house. The Landons have a business in Columbia and use this location as a week-end retreat. Roy Hurst was the son of John T. Hurst, and he built this home adjacent to his father’s home. Roy was a graduate of Washington and Lee University. After he received his Masters Degree at Washington and Lee, he taught there for a period of time before returning to Chesterfield where he married Violet Welsh. They had no children and later divorced. Roy then married Madge Gaskins, and they had one son and two daughters. Roy was engaged in buying and selling cotton, operating a grocery store, and serving a period of time as U. S. Postmaster. In the early 40’s he opened the Western Auto Store in Chesterfield and operated it with his son, “Jeep”, until he retired. Roy served in WW II as a Captain and Company Commander of the local S. C. State Guard, which was known as the Home Guard. The Home Guard was housed in the building that serves as the Main Street entrance to Craig Park.
