Elizabeth Ann Gaddy Rivers: Preston and Annie Belle Streater Burch built this house in 1937. Annie Belle and Press died just a few months part, she in 1994 and he in 1995. After her death their granddaughter, Ellen Owen Crowley, and her husband, Chucky Crowley, moved here to live with Press so that he would not be alone; He was still able to drive his car, and drink early morning coffee at Moore's Drive-In with his buddies, right up until his death. I can remember as a child calling him Press, but I always said "Miss" Annie Belle. Press was engaged in a number of businesses in town, including a dry goods store at 136 Main Street in the 40's, "Miss" Annie Belle worked in the County Treasurer's office for many years. After "Miss" Annie Belle and Press died, their only child, Mary Frances Burch Owen, who married Scott Owen, inherited the property, and their youngest child, Ellen Owen Crowley, and her husband Chucky, and their son C. J. live there today. |
