B. Thurman Teal House
Fay Teal House
Susan Owen Coates House

Elizabeth Ann Gaddy Rivers: This house was built by Thurman and Ophelia Davis Teal. After their deaths, their only son, Fay Teal inherited the property. For many years it was his rental property, but he sold it to Susan Owen McCormick (later Coates) in 1995. Among the renters who lived here were Wilson and Marion "Monkey" Teal, the Ariel Lisenby family, the Mickey Brooks family, and the Glenda Claytor family.
Susan and her mother, Mary Frances Burch Owen, who grew up next door, commented that the house has several different sizes of window. Mary Frances said she remembers hearing her family say that the house once burned and the windows were saved to be used in the house when it was rebuilt. Pam Rayfield Wood remembers hearing her mother, Sadie Wactor Rayfield, who lived two doors down the street, tell that the house that burned was not this one but a two-story wooden house with a big porch that the Teal's lived in across the street in front of this one. It is possible that there were fires at both locations. I can remember when the addition on the west side of the house was built as an apartment for Ophelia Teal's sister, Bessie Davis Griggs. Both sisters were excellent seamstressses and "Miss" Bessie was the alterations lady at Belk's downtown for most of my childhood.
