Elizabeth Ann Gaddy Rivers: Abner and Leoda Leaird Davis built this house. Leoda was the half-sister of Mildred Leaird Ratliff who lived next door. The Davises had three children: G. A., Jr., Jenny, and Gene. Abner ran a liquor store downtown besid Walter Davis's barber shop on Main Street; Walter was Abner's brother. Gene inherited this house, and he and his wife, Gloria Stewart Davis, live here. At one time Gloria operated Red Barn Crafts, a crafts and consignment shop, in the small building on the west side of the house. Gene was employed in the men's department of Belk Department Store for many years. He also served on the staff of the local National Guard when it was an active unit.
