(Sheriff of Chesterfield County 1930 to 1947)
(Constructed around 1934 - 1935)
Floyd Samuel “Jack” Douglass, Jr. House

Ann Douglass Gibson Nichols, Cornelia Douglass Bittle, and Millie Douglass Epps: This home was built in the early 1930’s by Floyd Samuel “Jack” Douglass and his wife, Mary Vann Kendall Douglass, both of whom lived in the house until their deaths. Their four children (Ann, Cornelia, Millie, and Jack, Jr.) grew up there. This home provided a beautiful and happy setting for an active and loving family. Mr. Douglass graduated from Chesterfield Schools and received his law degree from the University of South Carolina Law School in 1924. In 1930 he was elected sheriff of Chesterfield County and served in that capacity until 1947. During his tenure as sheriff he was elected President of the Sheriff’s Association of South Carolina. He was appointed Master-in-Equity by the governor in 1951 and served in that capacity until his death in 1981. In 1980 Mr. Douglass was honored by the Chesterfield Bar Association with the dedication of his portrait that hangs in the Chesterfield County Courthouse. For 32 years Mr. Douglass was associated with Dilmar Oil Company. He was a charter member and served as president of the Chesterfield Civitan Club. He was a member of the executive board of the Pee Dee Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America. He was honored by that group as a recipient of the Silver Beaver Award. He was an elder in the Chesterfield Presbyterian Church and served as Sunday School Superintendent for 16 years. “Mr. Jack,” as he was known, was also involved in various other business interests in the county. Mrs. Douglass, a native of Cheraw, graduated from Cheraw High School and received a BS degree from Converse College in Spartanburg, SC. She is remembered for her beautiful yard and her gardening knowledge, her profound interest in history, and the lovely flower arrangements she created and shared with many friends. At the time of her death the house passed by designation to her son, Jack, Jr., who lives in the home today.
