J. M. “Buck” Lawrence House
Barney Abernathy House

Ann Douglass Gibson Nichols, Cornelia Douglass Bittle, and Millie Douglass Epps: This was the home of Daniel Preston Douglass and his wife, Louisa Amelia Chapman Douglass, and various members of their family. The house was purchased by Daniel Preston Douglass while it was under construction prior to 1920. He and his wife lived here until their deaths. Their daughter, Millie Douglass Sanders, a World War I widow, maintained a residence here as did Mrs. Douglass’s brother, J. Stoll Chapman. The Douglass’s son, Floyd Samuel “Jack” Douglass, brought his bride, Mary Vann Kendall Douglass, to this house when they were married in 1931, and their first two children, Ann and Cornelia, were born while they lived here (until about 1935). After that year the house was continuously occupied by members of the Douglass family, but portions of the house were let to tenants at times. In the 1940’s, the Duncan H. McGregor family moved from Ruby into the house. Mrs. McGregor (Sallie Berry Douglass) was a daughter of Daniel Preston and Louisa Douglass. The McGregors lived here until about 1950 when they moved across the street to the brick house at 717 West Main Street and when the house passed from Douglass family occupancy and ownership at that time. The Douglass family had five members who served as Sheriff of Chesterfield County. That fact was noted in Ripley’s Believe It or Not.

Elizabeth Ann Gaddy Rivers: I was a frequent visitor to this house in the 1960's and 1970's when I was a member of the same bridge club as Agnes Smith Lawrence. She and "Buck" and their two sons, Mac and Tommy, lived here. The current owners and residents are Barney and Linda Brigman Abernathy.
