Monroe Gaskins House

Sara Hazel Ellis: I recall that Mrs. Redfearn spoke to us about our "tipping" over to see them rather than saying for us to "come" over. I also recall that she said,”You can turn on the porch light anytime you want to–since it provides me with enough light to get ready for bed.” The Redfearns–Ira and Myrtle Poston Redfearn–had one son, I. C., and he and his wife Miriam had four daughters: Marlene, Iris, Kyra, and Sherry. I. C. was a career army officer. There was an old building to the right rear of the Redfearn house, and my mother told me that it had been a store at one time. I thought it was a barn.

James W. Jenkins: I remember delivering papers to Mr. Ira’s house. The house was below street level and had steps leading down from the sidewalk to the house. I can recall the paper landing on the roof on more than one occasion. Today Monroe and Margie Rayfield Gaskins have built a new house at this location.

Selma Rae Rivers Henderson: I. C. Redfearn was a good athlete, but his mother, "Miss" Myrtle, was strongly opposed to his playing football. I. C. kept his football equipment and practice clothes at David and Ray Redfearn's house down the street, and without "Miss" Myrtle's permission or knowledge, he was one of CHS's better football players. I also remember that she always called Mr. Ira "Daddy".

Elizabeth Ann Gaddy Rivers: I remember Mr. Ira's garden and the pasture for his cows that was fenced in right off the street on the east side of the house.
