Our
Chapter
organized was to clean-up and care for abandoned cemeteries.
This undertaking has been slow to develop because it involves
a great amount of physical labor and the fact that there are so many cemeteries in need in Chesterfield County.
The first cemetery to be cleaned back in 1998 was the Davis/
Rivers Cemetery off Jackson Road. Members that took part
in this cleanup were: James C. and Julie Pigg, Steve Bailey,
David C. McLeod, and Sharon Corey.
The old Antioch Cemetery off Hornesboro Road was cleaned
on Saturday, October 18, 2003, and clean-up participants included: Jean N. Rushing, David C. McLeod, Tommy Jones, Carolyn Rhynes, Patsy B. Leviner, Henrietta Mills, Leon and Phoebe Mayberry, James Albert, Nancy Lowery, Robbie Keller and Bobbie Keller (Boy Scouts of America), Marty Mills and (his children) Maleah and Marlin Mills. Donald H. Lowery, Jr., and John and Judy Rivers provided refreshments.
The next cemetery that we will clean is the Captian John Blakeney cemetery in Pageland. The clean-up will mainly consist of trash and debris removal. There also is lawn and landscape work to be done. The sign that directs you to the cemetery needs to be painted also, so if you can copy exactly the art work on the sign and refurbish it, please let us know.
The Captian John Blakeney Cemetery will be cleaned on Saturday, February 23, 2008. Please come out and help us! We will begin at 9:00 a.m. Please email us for directions. The cemetery cleaning has been postponed until March due to rain. We will post the new date asap.
